Thanksgiving Gifts for Dogs: Gift Boxes and Pet-Friendly Holiday Ideas

By PODPAWS Editorial · · 5 min read

Thanksgiving tends to revolve around the table, and dogs are usually orbiting it hopefully. It is also an underrated gifting moment — smaller than Christmas, warmer than Halloween, and easy to get right with a dog thanksgiving gift box or a personalized keepsake.

Dog Thanksgiving Gift Boxes

A gift box works especially well for Thanksgiving because the holiday is about abundance. Mix treats the dog can have with one keepsake the owner keeps, and the gift reads as generous rather than obligatory.

Personalized Thanksgiving Keepsakes

A custom portrait or photo keepsake made from the dog’s picture turns the holiday into something that lasts past the weekend. Browse custom pet photo gifts for formats that suit autumn framing.

Thanksgiving Gifts for Pet Lovers

For hosts and family, thanksgiving pet gifts that acknowledge their dog tend to land better than host gifts that ignore the animal entirely. Anything featuring their own pet reads as considered.

Planning Ahead

Personalized items are made to order. Order early enough for production and shipping, especially for late-November delivery. Shop the collection to start.

Choose a Thanksgiving Gift by Recipient

Start by deciding whether the present is for the dog, the pet parent, or the host household. A treat basket is only a good choice when you know the dog’s food restrictions and the owner is comfortable introducing new treats. A household keepsake is the safer direction when you do not know the dog well: it celebrates the relationship without asking the pet to eat, wear, or play with anything.

  • For the dog: ask the owner what the dog already uses and what should be avoided.
  • For the host: choose something personal to their pet, rather than a generic autumn decoration.
  • For a long-distance recipient: confirm the delivery address and timing before ordering a made-to-order item.

Where PODPAWS Fits

PODPAWS does not sell food, toys, or pre-filled Thanksgiving baskets. Its small collection is made for the person who wants a lasting, personalized keepsake. The matching pet-and-owner necklace suits a pet parent who enjoys wearing a reminder of their companion; the framed wool-felt memorial figurine is specifically a remembrance piece. Check each listing for the exact options and sizing before choosing.

A useful rule: let the holiday set the moment, but let the recipient’s relationship with their pet determine the gift. For ideas by recipient, browse our pet gift guide index.

What a Dog Can Actually Eat on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is the single most dangerous food day of the year for dogs, and most of the danger comes from people being generous. Plain cooked turkey meat, white or dark, with the skin and fat removed, is fine for most dogs in small amounts. Plain canned pumpkin — the pure puree, not pie filling — is fine. Plain green beans and plain cooked sweet potato are fine. Everything else on the table needs a second thought.

Never give cooked bones. Turkey bones splinter into shards that perforate the gut, and this is the classic Thanksgiving emergency surgery. Keep the dog away from onions, garlic, leeks, chives and shallots in any form, including stuffing and gravy, because they damage red blood cells. No grapes or raisins. No chocolate, no macadamia nuts, no alcohol, no xylitol — the sweetener in sugar-free gum, mints and some peanut butters. Rich gravy and butter-heavy mash cause pancreatitis in dogs who are not used to fat, and that is a multi-day hospital stay rather than a stomach ache.

If the dog does get into something, do not wait for symptoms. Call your vet or an emergency clinic with the food and the rough amount, and keep the packaging. Most bad outcomes on this holiday are the result of waiting until morning.

A Gift Box That Doesn’t Duplicate the Table

The reason a dog Thanksgiving gift box works is that it is not food from the table. The good ones mix something the dog can consume safely — a single-ingredient chew, a bag of plain dehydrated treats — with something that outlasts the weekend. A box of treats is gone by Friday. A personalized piece made from the dog’s photo is still on the wall in five years, and it is the part of the gift the owner actually keeps.

If you are giving to the household rather than the dog, aim at the person: a keepsake featuring the dog acknowledges that this is a family with an animal in it, which is a different and warmer gesture than another bag of biscuits.

Ordering Around the Holiday

Thanksgiving sits close enough to Christmas that the two deadlines interact. If you want the piece for the Thanksgiving table itself, order at least three weeks ahead: 7–10 days of crafting plus 7–15 days of domestic shipping leaves no slack for a redo if something needs adjusting. If the gift is really for December, order once, early, rather than twice in a hurry.

The current Christmas cut-off is November 20, 2026, based on 7–10 days of crafting plus up to 25 days of international shipping. Domestic orders placed in early December usually still arrive, but the cut-off is the date we will stand behind. Full details are on the shipping page.

Questions People Ask

How do you ship a custom gift when you are traveling for Thanksgiving?
Order to arrive ahead of the trip. Production is 7 to 10 business days after approval, and shipping is 15 to 25 days, so the order needs to go out roughly five weeks before the date.
